Why is my iPod showing zero capacity after new HDD?

My HDD failed (clicking began) so I decided to replace it, I hade 80gb but decided to go for a 120gb HDD.

I have replaced it following instructions from website and it is turning on asking to please restore.

When plugged into my laptop itunes finds the iPod but it says I have zero capacity.

I disconnected my iPod and exited itunes, plugged back in and checked the properties of the drive and it too says I have 0kb used or available.

I have tried to check for errors and it says cannot access disk.

What do people think can it be fixed or is it a dodgy HDD?

I bought the HDD from ebay

Is this a new drive or a used drive? Do you have a Mac or a PC? Have you tried to format the new drive?

by

It is a new drive. I have PC, Windows 8. When I try and format the disk it freezes my entire PC.

Try an inexpensive Zif-to-USB adapter and remove the drive from the iPod. Then connect it to your PC and see if it gets found as a separate drive, not an iPod.

I think that it could be faulty, but it also may just need to be reformatted. Unfortunately there seem to be less and less suppliers for these!
