PC3-8500 DDR3 Min. RAM Speed: 1066 MHz

Standard RAM: 2 GB Maximum RAM: 8 GB*

Details: 2 GB of RAM is installed as two 1 GB modules, no slots free.

*Apple officially supports a maximum of 4 GB of RAM. Originally, this model was only unofficially capable of stably supporting 6 GB of RAM, but as confirmed by OWC, it is capable of supporting 8 GB of RAM if updated to Boot ROM Version MB51.007D.B03 and running MacOS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" or higher.

What / who is OWC? Is it official? And how do I update to Boot ROM v MB51.07D.B0 or check what I have? I run on El Capitan and plan to upgrade to High Sierra if added RAM is possible.

Thank you!! Perhaps overextending the original question, I understand it is compatible, but will High Sierra improve a MacBook (plain) Late-2008 aluminium unibody 2,0 GHz performance or worsen it? (I read extensively that e.g. Leopard was heavier than Lion/ML for older hardware, the same for SL vs. L)

@freddycrux I don't think you do understand. Your machine IS NOT compatible with Sierra or High Sierra.

Sorry and thanks for clarifying. I got things totally mixed up..... I was at the same time thinking if my other MB Air 2012 (5,2 1.8 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 256 HDD), would actually benefit or worsen from an upgrade from El Capitan to HS..... And surely a new post is the best way to go about it, but since you've been so kind to respond in detail and quickly, I'll just A2A this way.
