How long should an Erase/Format process on a Seagate HD Take?

How long should the Erase function in Disk Utility take to perform on a Seagate 320gb 7200rpm HDD take? I have previously upgraded the 120gb hd to a Seagate 250gb 5400rpm on my MacBook and reformatting/cloning the drive was a breeze, however this new drive seems to lag during the Erase process. Would the fact that its a 7200 rpm drive on a Core 2 Duo 2ghz Black MacBook matter?

Options

It's according to what options you selected on the format and how many passes you selected. A straight format might take thirty seconds, writing zeros could take three hours.
