steven williams, sounds like a bad brake light switch. Use a multimeter and see if you have always continuity. It is also possible that it has dislodge and is always on. If you let us know exactly what vehicle you have, may be we can help you a bit better. Here is a general adjustment procedure for a Chevy P.U:
Switch Adjustment
1. Apply the brake pedal.
2. Pull the lever (A) back to its stop.
3. Pull the brake pedal against the pedal stop.
