Won't turn on or charge. High pitched whine. What needs replacing?

Hi,

I just dug my iPod classic 5th Gen out of a drawer and was really disappointed it didn't turn on. I have tried leaving it on charge and have tried connecting to itunes but can't get any life out of it. I noticed when I hold it close to my ear when I have it on charge there is a constant high pitched whining noise.

After finding this great site I am optomistic about repairing it. Only problem is I don't have any idea which part needs replacing. Can anybody help?

Thanks in advance...

Rob

Start with the battery. The whining noise could be a bad hard drive, but to make that determination, you need a new battery first. Do not go and change a logic board without further diagnosing what has failed. The iPod has a decent diagnostics mode that will assist you further.

Thanks, I will go ahead and try the battery :)

Hi I was wondering if you ever got your iPod working? My iPod video is having the same problem. I replaced the battery today and still no go, so now I just need to wait for the hard drive to get here.

Hi francis,

I haven't got round to replacing the battery yet, thanks for reminding me! I think I'll order the battery now. Do you have the exact same symptoms? Maybe I should just go ahead and order both battery and hard drive together...

Please let me know how it goes

The battery should be replaced first, and if that doesn't work, then the logic board should be replaced. Stuff sitting in a drawer will cause the battery to crap out.
