Why do some disks read and others won't?

Hey, I have an Xbox 360 Pro 60GB, bought in 2008, that has been struggling to read discs over the last year or so. I assumed it was on the way out, but I've just noticed only certain games don't read immediately.

For example, Oblivion, Fallout New Vegas and Assassins Creed Revelations all immediately go to an 'Open Tray' message after closing the disc tray.

But, Black Ops II will read immediately every single time. All three of those games work on my brothers Xbox, and none are even slightly scratched - what can I do about this?

I've read a lot of suggestions for changing the disc drive but it'd be nice to know what else could be done? Would POT calibration help at all?

Thanks, Will.

Will, Pot calibration might help, but unless done properly it may burn out your laser. I would suggest you start of with using a commercially available CD/DVD drive cleaning disk. See what it gives you after that. Hope this helps, good luck.

I should have probably mentioned that I had already tried one of those kits. They improved the situation because they made my newer disc readable 100% of the time, but still I couldn't get the older discs to read.

Today I borrowed a multimeter from a friend and got a reading of 6.01 (my drive is a lite-on), and since most people consider above 3.5 to be safe, I tweaked to 5.75 with no improvement. Tweaking to 5.50 fixed the problem and I can finally play some games!

Thank you for the help :)
