usb ports not working

i have an intel 2.16ghz iMac 2006/7

I connected a usb hub at the wrong voltage 12V and it seems to have blown the ports as there is no power coming from them is this a new logic board or can I use a wireless usb hub to bypass the ports also is there anyway to use the firewire ports.

Many thanks Derek.

Firewire≠USB. A wireless USB hub could be a workaround, however, your throughput may be lower than a direct USB connection.

AFAIK replacing the board is a DIY option (a major project)-involves completely dissassemblig and reassembling the computer. Perhaps a local computer repair/electronics shop could repair the USB ports - that sort of thing is very advanced… soldering logic board components is not for the inexperienced, it's very easy to destroy a multilayer board..

DIY doesn't rule out getting help from others when needed.

Dear machead3

I really appreciate your response since posting my query if have been digging around and came up with an Iogear 4 port wireless USB sharing station which i have ordered and will hopefully get me out of my self dug hole.

I was always under the impression that the output plugs on power supplies were voltage specific by size to avoid mistakes like mine; so a word to the wise "always check the label".

I got the impression also, that while there are firewire to usb conversion cables out there, that the two were incompatible. Any thoughts on this in case the above doesn't work?

Regarding the logic board transplant/usb port repair, it's an option i was considering and may yet undertake as i hate to throw out a perfectly functioning iMac even if it would be considered "obsolete" by some.

Lastly I would like to praise the ifixit website in this day of throw away mentality it's a much needed resource. I drive a 1988 VW Passat diesel estate with 250000 miles on the clock it starts every morning an gives 50 miles to the gallon and can be fixed at the roadside with a piece of fence wire and a small hammer "obsolete"

is a greatly misused term and I would certainly trust it over the modern computer controlled equivalent.

Thanks again for your time,

Sincerely yours .

Derek Wilson.

USB-Firewire or Firewire-USB has protocol issues, throughput (transfer speed) issues, as well as data transfer type issues so it's a crapshoot. For certain values of "work" some adapters will function, while the same adapter will fail at other tasks. ( e.g. Many older DV cameras do work with New USB adapters on computerswithout firewire ports - some will not) Straight cable would not be the way to go… the system wouldn't be able to figure out what the heck was wrong with the cable. - For future reference you posted a Comment in the place where only Answers belong.
