How much RAM memory do you have currently?

by

I am having an issue changing my RAM. i have a 4 GB stick (DDR3) ready to be put in. I took apart the back and found the spot to change it, after putting the laptop back together and attempting to turn it on, I got nothing but a dim lit black screen. Power button is white (as it normally is when computer is powered on) but no "Asus" opening screen came up. If anyone could assist me with this issue it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

that means that you did not get the correct ram for your specific laptop. Remove the ram you added and your laptop will boot back up as normal. If you are not sure which ram your laptop needs then you can try the crucial scanner from crucial.com or you can contact your specific manufacturer, they most likely will have a 1800 support line.

Sorry to say most of these Ultra Books don't have upgradable memory. Sadly this is the case here on this system. Here's a review that explains the limits of this system mobiletechreview - Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A Touch Review

Update

Sorry to say the answer is still the same for the S301 model. The memory is not upgradable.

Here's a review with pictures of your system logic board ultrabookreview - Asus Vivobook S301 review.

This is not the same. The Q301LA can be expanded to a total or 12GB RAM.

I have a Patriot Viper 1.35vts@1600hz 8GB stick plus the 4 built into the board.

In the link provided you can see the metal box that hides the ram stick.

Anyway. If you plan on upgrading to an ssd, as of 8/25/15 amazon has the samsung 850evo 1TB ssd for 325. My local store still sells it for 500.

If you dont go with the ssd. The Q301LA has a slim 7mm drive. Make sure you dont make the same mistake I did purchasing a 9mm regular drive and end up wasting your time.

The memory can be expanded to 8 GB.

Nope, it can't be upgraded. You could have bought a 8GB model instead. The memory chips are soldered onto the logic board.

My friend opened his up and advised 4gb is on the board 2 GB is on a memory module but it looks smaller then the normal laptop memory. When did you open yours up?

by

We know what parts is what. It has a hard drive plus the on board 4gb or memory and had a 2 GB removable memory. The 2 GB is upgradable to 4gb to make a total of 8gb. The PC we opened up not sure is the exact same is the one above but it is a variation of a Q301LA. The system friend has has 6gb total and expandable to 8gb.

by

OK, your friend has a different model than what the OP had. I suspect you have this one Asus VivoBook S400CA 14". Different series of systems have different options! So we do need to make sure we are talking about the same model which is were we got side tracked here.

by

Nope that's not it. Have you opened the op model of laptop?

Yes i just want to confirm this, I just put in an extra 4GB low voltage 1.35V DDR3 1600Mhz chip that i bought from crucial for my asus q301-la vivobook laptop. (did this 5 minutes ago!)

First take off the screws on the back cover...

Next use a credit card to pop open the back cover

Next you will see a metal box on the side you can pop that right off and there is your memory slot

Put the ram in and when you do it will be angled upward, push down on the ram gently and you will here the pins click to ensure your ram has been properly put in.

Next before you put the screws back on turn on your laptop to ensure that your ram is working and go into system information in windows or "dmidecode" in linux and make sure that you see 8gb of ram.

On a side note i have heard a few people put in an 8gb ram chip instead of a 4gb for a total of 12gb of ram and that it still works...i may try this later.

Here is a video of a guy adding ram that may help you...its not the Q301LA but it will help get you started..

Now if you are still unsure what ram to buy and you don't mind paying a few dollars extra (around $10USD) you can order from Kingstom Ram in the UK which they state their ram is specifically for the ASUS Q301LA laptop. Here is that link...

Hope this helps...and enjoy!

Yes, the Asus VivoBook Q301LA-BHI5T02 memory can be expanded from the onboard 4GB to 8GB.

I have this model and have taken it apart to install a SSD. Inside, you will find a single expansion slot for a 4GB module, for a total of up to 8GB.

wow. Asus said if you put in a 8 gb it will not work. They also said if you add 4gb, it will override the on board memory. - my q301la only as the built in memory. If you get this can you confirm you have 12gb working today?
