Lid latch is stuck in open position, can I unstick it?

My Macbook Pro 15" A1226 is not latching shut. The little hooks come down but the latch on the front of the computer part is pushed in and will not spring back out. I can see the metal parts that the magetic hooks should grab onto are too far out of reach because it is in the open position. Is this something I can repair myself?

I took out the battery to see if I could gain access but there is a plate that seems to run the length of the front edge.

Possibly You'll have to go as far as removing the top case to see - you may have to replace the latch (ebay).

I would be happy to replace the latch, I will need directions on how to get at it. Where can I get the directions?
