Why is my iMac desktop wont display pictures.

hi i have a iMac 20"widescreen desktop intel core 2 duo.My problem is every time i turn the switch on i first i heard the sound on it & then it show the apple sign & the background is all white. & then it takes an hour coz sometimes i just let it running just in case i go back to normal but its not still shown the white background with the apple sign in the middle.. I dont know what to do in it. sorry but it hard for me to explain how.

Options

Start up from your System Installation Disk. Insert the disk and restart holding down the "C" key. Go to the second screen and the pull down menu will appear. Go to Utilities - Disk Utilities and run the repair on your hard drive. If this fails you will need to reinstall the system. You can do a archive and install to retain your user data.
