Recently bought a G5 A1177 at a thrift shop. It doesn't have a hard drive. Bought a used one that matched the parts number I researched. The ports on the hard drive do not match the plugs in the computer- is there any way to use this hard drive or do I need to buy the correct hard drive? How do I know which drive will have the correct port?

These older mac's have the older PATA HD's so you will need to find one with the PATA port Vs SATA port.
While there are PATA to SATA adapters still out there I'm not sure if it will work here. You have some space issues to get it to fit and you also have the way the OS is expecting to 'see' the HD which may not allow it to boot up.
This series uses a PowerPC CPU chip from IBM Vs Intel's which is what is used in todays systems. The OS versions are very limited as well as the apps, so the long term investment on this system is limited.
This is the system people often get to create a Hack'in'tosh system as many liked the case (and it was often cheap).
