How do I troubleshoot a Kernel Panic?

I have an aluminum intel iMac that will start up and run for about 5 minutes, then I get the multilanguage screen to restart. I have tried different memory. I would like to wipe the hard drive and reinstall the software, but once I get the restart screen, I need to wait for several hours before it will restart again and then I start over again. My question is "Are kernal panic most often caused by software." Do I need to do a clean install?

Having to wait several hours to restart indicates a hardware problem. Sounds like it has to cool down. To be sure, start up from your system installation disk (hold the "C" key down with the disk inserted),and see if the problem persists. If you do not have your user data backed up, do it immediately.

Next start up from the System installation disk that came with the computer and hold down the D key. Then run diagnostics.
