Computer will not complete startup due to malfunction

My laptop got slapped really hard by a drunk person while it was playing a youtube video. Ever since it has gone to the start-up screen with the apple and the spinning wheel but never reaching home screen. I suspect hardware damage from the shock...am I wrong? What can I do?

Options

Boot from some other source (optical drive, thumb drive, other machine) and use Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility;Disk First Aid - verify and repair your HD (I suspect that the HD suffered damage) If you can not repair the HD it will need to be replaced.
