Can I Disconnect the Optical Drive without Errors in my iMac?

I have an old iMac EMC2133 with an optical drive that is failing. I don't need the optical drive.

Following your guide, I can remove or disconnect the optical drive. If I simply remove it or disconnect it, will the computer work properly? Or do I need to replace the drive.

Currently, the optical drive runs constantly, repeating the eject cycle over and over.
