Can't partition new 500GB drive?

Installed 500GB drive. MacBook recognizes drive but Disk Utility shows 3.6TB! When I try to partition the drive it fails with input/output error. Have rebooted several times from OS X install disc.

Sorry dolmen ;-{

Your system can only handle SATA I (1.5 Gb/s) drives. See if this Toshiba drive offers a jumper to drop the I/O speed (check the spec sheet for it online).

Also, make sure your firmware is unto date, checkout this Apple TN on how to check it and update it EFI & SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs

Double check that you have the right SATA type… a SATA I or II not a SATA iii (what many new drives are).
