Top back gets hot, speed worse, loud. Fan or HDD?

My iMac is loud and hot even with almost no applications running. Heat seems to originate somewhere in the top area of the device. Speed seems to have gone down.

Can't start AHT, don't have my Boot Disc available, so I cannot start it over that one either.

Does anyone know what I can do?

My IR heat gun shows that these normally run about 102 degrees coming out of the vent. Has the original hard drive been replaced? Do you know what operating system you are running? You can order an original system installation disk from Apple for $16 plus shipping and tax. Can you tell us what kind of sounds you are getting?

The original hdd is still in place. The sounds are just the once of a fan working hard. I am running mavericks ans after christmas I will try to find the disc.
