iMac died after loud "pop" and will not turn on, why?

Hi,

My iMac was in sleep mode, when i moved my wireless mouse to wake it... the computer made a loud "pop" and shut off... I tried turning it on, but nothing. I tried diffrent outlets and still nothing. Someone suggested i open it up and check the Capacitors... I did, but they look fine. The ones on the power supply look fine as well. It has no warranty anymore, it's why I decided to open it up. Now i don't know what to look for, Should I just get a new power supply?

Someone please help... I know it's an old computer, but I really don't want to trash it.

after the "pop" did you smell something burnt?

by

No burnt smell... Even after i opened it up... I sniffed all over, but nothing. :( I'll check the capacitors again... maybe i could've missed something.

Check the diagnostic LED lights if #1 is out it's your power supply.

To be honest... I did not check for lights after i opened it up... All i am sure of is that the power button had no response whatsoever. Now it's all disassembled, so probably can't check for lights any... Or can I?

Hmmm... I'll have to put it back together to check this. I'll do that and get back with the LED results.

Same exact thing happened to my iMac. I have a 2012 iMac and it won't turn on after the loud pop. I have tested the cord and the power supply and all seem to be fine. There are no burning smell and I don't think the 2012 iMacs have the diagnostics LEDs. I am worrying that my logic board has failed.

Have you fixed your iMac since then ?

What did you end up finding out? I have a 2012 iMac, 21.5" and they DO have the diagnostic LED's. #1 is on for me. I am having the same problems as you.

This happened to my Late 2012 iMac. Heard a pop and smelled a bit of electrical smoke. It tripped a circut breaker and wouldn't turn on afterwards.

Pulled the thing apart. No visible damage, but the none of the diagnostic LEDs would turn on when connected to power. Replaced the PSU and it was good as new.
