Replacing ball joints if the boot is ripped?

Do I need to replace my lower ball joints if there is a rip in the ball joint? And the mechanic at the shop said he cant do an alignment because there is play in the lower ball joint but i couldnt find any play in it. Is there sure fire way to check?

Jamie, you do not have to replace the ball joints if the boot is ripped, but you do if there is excessive play in it. Not sure how you checked it, but consult this video as well as this write up. It sounds like you are not sure if your mechanic is telling you the truth, I would suggest you check with another garage and get a second opinion. Hope this helps, good luck.
