an iPod connector piece is stuck in my mac's digital output port

I was listening to music with an external iPod jack hooked up to RCA wires. The connector must have been used too much and snapped. The remaining piece is in the music port (digital output) and I cannot get it out because it's so small. I currently have no sound. ANy suggestions? I can bring it into mac and they can replace it but its $240 and worse- it's a 5 day wait.

Kill all power going to and from the machine and CAREFULLY try to remove it using a pair of needle nose pliers. If that doest work you will need to find a different tool that can get the piece out without damaging anything, but $240 and a 5 day wait is absurd.
