Why is my MacBook/Mac OS freezing on me?

Sometime ago I dropped my MacBook. It was running and I dropped on the carpet right on the corner were the hard drive dwells. After that it went catatonic. I took it to the apple store. They reinstalled Mac OS 10.6.2 and all was good. The tech told me that this might work or might not. He said that the hard drive may or may not be damaged and as such it might fail. So I used it for a while and it worked great. During this time I installed Windows XP via Bootcamp. Not too long its starts freezing on me. At random times it will freeze stiffer than a dead Eskimo. After 5-15 minutes it will unfreeze and continue business as usual. Is this caused by the hard drive being damaged? My Windows XP install works perfectly; no crashes, hangups, or stalls. (How many times can you say this about Windows?) Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

On a side note: If it is the hard drive, will this one work?

Was your laptop on when you dropped it? What OS was it on? How high was the drop?

And yes, that HDD will be fully compatible with your laptop.

Laptop was on. It was on Mac OS X 10.6.1

This was before I installed Windows.

I dropped it about 4 feet onto carpet.

The SMS (Sudden Motion Sensor) should have protected the HDD from any damage, but since you did drop it on the corner with the HDD the damage may have been too extensive that just parking the heads will protect it. When it freezes, does the HDD make sounds? this is the biggest indicator of a failing drive.

by

Not usually. Rarely it will. Most of the time its just quiet.

by

Also, that WD Scorpio has its own technology called ShockGuard and if you install that into you're laptop, you'll want to disable SMS if you experience any hangs, crashes or kernal panics as its due to a conflict between SMS and ShockGuard. :Edit: I usually can not hear the hard drive anyway.

There could be damage to the hard drive. As for the new hard drive, ifixit sells hard drives for macs ad there are instuctions on how to replace it. If you do go for the new hard drive, don't get that particular one, it only spins at 5400 rpm's, you should get one that spins faster than that otherwise the hard drive can slow down your whole system.

the instructions tell you what parts you're going to need, if you don't already.

Someone I know has installed one of those in his laptop. He said that is was very loud. My requirements for another hard driver were this: cheap, reputable manufacture, at around 500Gb, and speed wasn't a priority. It's just used for school stuff. The original hard drive spun at 5400RPM and that worked fine. Thoughts?

For reputable HDD manufactures, its only Seagate and WD imho and if you the scorpio series is the quieter, cheaper series with the scorpio blacks running faster and louder. If you want ultimate quietness and speed, but pricy, you can look at SSDs

I'm a desktop computer person so I don't know much about which laptop hard drives are good and what not. If its not too much trouble would you mind throwing a few recommendations my way? Thanks.

Well I personally like WD better, but thats me, but any of these will do you good:WD Scorpio Series ranging from 160 gb to 750 gb!

I've installed a lot of the WD Scorpio Blacks 320 GB and have never had a problem with sound. +
