Can I swap original HD for a SSD Hybrid 3.5"?

I would like to know if its possible to just do a simple swap of the original hard drive in the iMac, with a SSD instead.

I understand I can add an additional drive by taking out the optical drive, but I simply want to take out the original HD and replace it with a SSD.

Is this possible and how ?

Just to be clear here you want a hybrid HD (HD with SSD caching as one device) Vs replacing the HD for a straight SSD correct?

I would strongly recommend the hybrid HD direction first. Follow this IFIXIT guide iMac Intel 24" EMC 2267 Hard Drive Replacement. You do need to make sure you get the correct SATA I/O speed drive. Your system can support a SATA II (3 Gb/s) HD or hybrid drive.

Seagate makes a good unit, review your options and lets us know which one you are thinking of.

I was thinking to replace my original 640 Gb HD with a straight SSD drive.

Would the above be faster than replacing it with a HD Hybrid ?

Yes a SSD is faster but at what cost and is the system you are using it in going to benefit from the added speed. Frankly, Your system is not going to get much improvement from a straight SSD solution over a hybrid drive. With a hybrid you gain the speed of the SSD but you still hang onto the storage space a HD offers and the price per MB is a lot lower. Bottom line here I would go with the hybrid drive.
