Options

2nd HD in optical bay versus using 2nd drive kit.

I understand that on 2011 21.5" iMacs you can install a second drive in the empty space behind the Superdrive, and iFixit sells a neat little kit to help you do that.

My question is: if I prefer to remove the Superdrive and install a second drive there with the 12.7mm caddy, is this still possible on this model or has the caddy changed dimensions/specs?

Not sure why you would want to give up your optical drive when you don't need to. You have a spare SATA port so you're not loosing the function of the optical drive.

In theory it should work. But I don't know of anyone doing this.
