Just LCD screen or entire display assembly?

Is it possible to simply get a replacement LCD screen, or is it necessary to get the entire display assembly which includes camera etc? I replaced the LCD on an older plastic MacBook and could just get the LCD. Ifixit seems only to list an entire assembly for sale.

Thanks for your help.

Sorry. This is for a Unibody MacBook.

Unfortunately you've got to replace the entire screen assembly. The unibody screen enclosure is very tightly melded together and unfortunately not a "user serviceable part" as it was in previous models.

It is pretty unsatisfactory with the "non serviceable" parts I think that with a little bit of tinkering and the right panel from china ;-) you could pull this job off.

Actually I just found an interesting video showing how to remove the front panel. From there it probably wouldn't be too hard to replace the screen itself. The hardest part appears to be getting past the glue, and then re-gluing it back on.

Thanks for your help. Ifixit does have a how-to for removing the glass, which involves a suction cup and a heat gun, which tracks the YouTube you posted. The YouTube adds helpful info about the adhesive. I'm tempted to give it a try if I could feel confident that I'd purchase the right LCD screen. Are there particular specs for the LCD screen that I should be looking for other than size?

No, If you're ready for one PAINFUL set of repair instructions, a new LCD screen is ~$129.

The tools you need are a Heat Gun, a professional quality suction cup (my Garmin GPS's worked fine!), and the usual, appropriately sized hex & phillips head screw drivers. There are several how-to guides out there.

This technically voids the warranty I'm perfectly sure (however, if you do a good job, you might be able to slide by).... the LCD's you'll find for sale are directly from the manufacturer generally--- indistinguishable.
