Most probably a hard drive failure. Try starting from the installation disk by inserting disk and holding down the "C" key on startup. Then try running Disk Utilities on the hard drive. Let us know the results and we can walk you through a hard drive replacement and recovery attempt.

Try booting into single user mode. Right after you turn it on, hold "Command,"and "S." If it boots succesfully, it will show a black screen with a prompt. In the prompt, type "fsck -fy" this will force checking on the disk, and attempt to fix errors. If you can't get into single user mode, try Mayer"s solution. There's a chance that if niether of these solutions work, you most likely have a bad hard drive.
