Cannot write on any External Hard Drive

Hello,

My MacBook Pro is 13" Unibody Late 2011. When I was working in Afghanistan, I was working with an external hard drive with documents for my work. When I attempted to "securely erase" my external hard drive after transferring it into a new one, I started to have an issue.

The issue is that I cannot write on external hard drives without using NTFS 3-G/MacFuse/FUSE for OS X. Before, I was able to read and write on any and now no more. Along with this issue, I have a Super Drive issue. I have placed a rewritable CD or DVD on my disk drive so that it can erase it. But it don't work. How can I get rid of this? I think this and the external hard drive issue are all connected.

I would like to use this MacBook for another 3-4 years to get me through university. Please help and your help will be greatly appreciated. I also have attached screenshots of what I am talking about. I have searched in Google and such and the answer I got was to replace the HDD. I don't want to replace it first, I need a second opinion on how I can get this fixed.

For forever and a day Mac's have not (with their software aka Finder) been good at re-writing optical disks. See if you can obtain a copy of Toast for Mac… It is a much more powerful optical disk writing program… that may work.

I would also be in direct contact with the vendor/author/provider of your erase program. Oh oh this doesn't look good: This project is no longer being maintained. We cannot currently help with any lion (or any large feline) related bugs or issues. The MacFuse google group is a decent resource for finding forks/replacement projects.

Maybe somone here or here could help.
