Did your iPod ever had a serious drop? Excessive mechanical shock is the biggest killer for a hard drive. The clicking sound is produced by the arm that moves the head. Big clicking sounds mean that the card is having trouble reading/tracking data and the arm is attempting to calibrate by cycling back and forth. If this happens, get a new hard drive. You can't repair it

Another reason that a drive will make a "clicking sound" is that the battery is depleted and may have to be charged. This happens when my ipod 5th generation has no battery resources left. Just a thought that may be helpful.
