I am wondering if it is possible to swap out the logic board to upgrade my USB bus to 3.0 and/or possibly my CPU to the 4th gen Intel processors?
In other words, is the form factor of the logic board universal in the iMac (including the new thinner models) where a new one will fit properly and has all the same connectors for a clean swap?

While the boards should interchange you might have problems with the display. The GPUs are different and the new model has no glass on the display.
if you do not "need" a USB 3 connection I would not undertake this project… it's a big one.
Since it's a desktop why not use this workaround… much simpler IMHO.
