Pictures gray w/exclamation point
photos coming up gray w/exclamation point on some files in iphoto.

This means that the alias can no longer find the photos, not that the photos are gone. First thing I would do is run Disk Utilities from my system installation disk and see if it will simply repair it. That failing let us know and we can give further repair instuctions.
