What's the benefit to a new hard drive?

I'm thinking of replacing the original hard drive in my 2.66 GHz iMac (EMC 2210) with a larger SSD. However, I worry that this will not really give me a huge benefit because processors have grown considerably since I bought this machine. How much of a performance bump can I expect? I'm hoping to run Mavericks and have it for at least a couple more years. Is that realistic?

On the most part I agree with Machead swapping out your HD for a SSD wouldn't be my first choice if I wanted more performance with what I have.

Instead I would go with a hybrid drive (a combo HD with SSD). A 1 or 2TB drive should offer you a good three years more of life in this system for regular home use and small business use.

As to RAM yes! More is better. With the newest EFI update applied you can in fact go to 8GB (two 4GB modules - matched set). While some of it is used for video you will only have access to 7GB of RAM (it will report 8GB in the system report).

Don't forget to upgrade your apps to 64bit versions as that too will improve things as well.

None - You want performance increase max out the RAM, ensure that at least 20% of your HD space is always free (you'll be pushing your machine hard to use OS 10.9) If you have no great or pressing need (email and web-shopping) I'd wait until you need Mavericks to use a peripheral or access a web site.

*Apple officially supports 4 GB of RAM, but third-parties have been able to upgrade the system to 6 GB of RAM using one 2 GB and one 4 GB memory module.
