Magsafe port replacement or other problem?

My early 2008 Macbook Pro 15" is having trouble charging. I have to push the charger into the port at just the right angle to get it to start charging. Is it the port that is causing the problem or the cord (it is a replacement cord)? I would like to replace whichever is the problem if I can.

I could not find a guide to replace a port on my laptop. I have never opened a computer/laptop myself; I don't know anything on how to start.

My computer also has a terrible time overheating. I believe that the fan doesn't work properly (I am using a cooling board with a fan and it helps) and the dvd/cd reader doesn't work at far as I know either (I believe that is from it getting too hot). Just wanted to point those problems out too in case it helps diagnose further.

Thank you for the

The fans have what looks like a radiator that the air flows through to cool. Over time these can become blocked with lint. Remove both fans and blow them out and clean the lint out. Here's the left one: MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo Models A1226 and A1260 Left Fan Replacement

You couldn't find a guide?

You must to read more carefully if you intend to DIY. Many DIYers do not study guides, they claim to have "read" them, but pull connectors off boards or cables and cause more damage to their machines because they didn't use the proper tools, or follow the guide and comments.

You should clean the magsafe connector on both the charger and the DC-in board carefully if they are crudded up.
