Upgrade to an SSD help speed at all?

I have a MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo Model A1211 2.16 GHz 3GB SDRAM with a 120GB HD If I upgrade to an SSD would that help in performance enough so that I won't have to upgrade whole computer immediately. I use it for photo editing mostly. Second question is how big of an SSD should I need? Would a 256 be big enough? I don't have a lot of software and my Photos are stored on external drive. Thank you

Options

A hybrid drive like a Seagate Momentus XT might be all you really need and at around $150 for a 500 GB drive would be a lot cheaper.
