Battery dead. Shouldn't it start-up when plugged in?

This laptop has Leopard 10.5 installed, but I still have the Tiger disks. How can I start it up or do I need to change OS.

Insert the Tiger disk and restart holding the "C" key down if it won't start with just the AC adapter plugged in. Then run Disk Utility on the hard drive. If this fails remove he battery and try starting.

The computer should start up fine even without a battery when running with a power adapter. Also 10.5 (Leopard) is compatible with this machine. If it doesn't start up specify what happens eg do the disk spins up, do the fan starts, does it do the start gong and does the display light up?
