Why doesn't my iPod show that it's charging?

My iPod does not display the charging symbol when plugged in, I know it's charging because my battery percentage goes up. However it takes hours for it to reach 100% and the iPod shuts off randomly while doing so. Once it's actually charged the battery drains after minimal use.
