Is there any way I can test a battery's performance?

I recently got my hands on a 1st generation iPhone that had been water damaged. Is there any way of testing the battery to see if it has any life in it? I'd rather not open mine up if the battery turns out to be pretty crappy...

yes - i know two ways - but both requre some kind of special hardware and are not for free

1, is a li-po charger for rc-cars(boats,planes) - those chargers are able to tell you exactly the mAh you have in a fully charged battery

2, an astratec battery tester - normally used in any nokia store - they are sometimes on ebay for around 100-150$

there are surely other ways too - but i never used other stuff than those 2 i mentioned
