MacBook won't turn on, how do I recover memory/data?

Basically, I fell asleep with my laptop on and my three year old brother took the opportunity to pour about two water bottles onto it. It was like that for about 45 minutes. I took the battery out and turned it upside down, leaving it like that for a week. I tried to turn it on, but nothing happened. Once the little white light turned on for a split second but that's it. My mom finally took it to the Apple store the other day and they said it would cost $800. Right now I really only need to get my documents off there (all data would be great). Should I do it myself, or take it to another place which will hopefully have lower prices? Is there even a chance of getting my stuff of there or is everything most likely fried?

I have figured out I'm going to need to do this after my macbook died. Are there any steps that I should be aware since I can't turn the macbook on or even get a light?

Follow the appropriate guide to remove your HD then install it into an external enclosure and transfer data.

If getting a new computer, get an external 2.5" SATA hard drive enclosure and put your old drive in it. USB is fine but firewire would be better. Go to applications - utilites - migration assistant and pick "transfer from an external hard drive or other backup. You can move just user data or settings or applications or all of them.

Or

You can get just an adapter, remove the old drive and hook it up, then transfer your data or use migration assistant. Here's a good adapter:
