Shuts down completely as it gets warmer

This iMac runs for about 1/2 hour when starting cold, and then just shuts down and has to be restarted with the power button. If restarted a second time, it shuts down in just a few minutes, then can't even get booted up before shutting down. If left to cool, I can get 1/2 hour of use before it quits again.

Is this definitely a power supply problem or could it be the CPU or something else.

I would start by downloading from the App Store the app Temperature Gauge or something like it. So you can monitor the systems thermal sensors and fans.

Then I would also step-down the displays brightness to the lowest I could still see it. To see if that helped as I monitored the sensors. Do you see anything popping out as running to hot?

Seems like you have got some heating related issue. It some time happens when your inside Fan stops working. I would suggest that if your machine is in warranty then you may need to go for a warranty claim.

David - Did you not read what I posted?? Again, please add content not fluff. If you see the answer is the same as what you are planing on posting the better direction is to give the already answered answer more importance by upping the score. This is how good (correct) answers are raised higher.
