what could happen if the cable is not connected ?

Display won't work. Try using an external display.

Options

This version of the iMac has a LED backlight for the LCD (Vs CFL's).

The LED Driver board (not inverter) the power for the backlight LED's also supplies the vertical sync for the LCD via the cable.
