iPod Doesn't Play Music or Video

This iPod charges, and syncs to iTunes. But when it is turned on, it displays a sad iPod icon. If it is turned on after that, it comes on normally, you can navigate through it. Yet, when you try to play music, the count stays at 0:00. I believe the headphone jack is okay because when inserting and removing headphones, the play/pause icons in the corner changed. When you try to fast forward in the song, it still does not play. Additionally, videos do not play, and the iPod freezes when you try to.

I've narrowed it down to either the hard drive or logic board? Has anyone experienced and repaired this problem? Thanks for your help.

have you tried a reset and / or restore from itunes?

does anything else work (clock, stopwatch etc?)

Sounds like it functions, so not the logic board, sounds pretty much like an HD failure

Yes, I tried a reset and restore. With the advice and answers posted here, I will soon try to replace the hard drive and post an update after the repair. Thanks everyone for your help.

UPDATE: After the first teardown, the click wheel and the button stopped working properly. I replaced the hard drive, but still get a sad iPod logo. I can't navigate through the iPod to see if the first problem still exists. I will purchase a new click wheel and with the advice from an iFixit customer rep, a new hard drive cable. I'll replace the click wheel and click wheel button first. If the sad iPod still shows, I'll replace the hard drive cable. If it still exists, I'll have to purchase a logic board. More updates will follow as long as the repair endures.

This usually means that your hard drive has gone bad. I had a classic that had similar symptoms that replacing the hard drive fixed.
