Where should I install the startup disk?

Hi!

I just purchased the dual drive installation kit and i was wondering if it made any difference where the startup drive is installed? Should i remove the HDD and replace it with the SSD or can i just pop the SSD in the place of the optical drive bay and format it as my startup disk?

Thanks

Best to put the SSD in the dual drive carrier and leave the HD in it's current location. Your system uses SATA for both HD & Optical ports.

Hi,

I would like to add some more information. Yesterday i got around to installing the new drive however it did seem to make a difference where I installed the startup disk. Disk utility would not allow me to reformat my drive and I therefore tried the new SSD in the main drive bay, which solved all my problems.

My specs: mid 2012 unibody 13 inch MacBook Pro Witt Mac OS X 10.8.5. I bought the ifixit dual hard drive upgrade kit. Samsung SSD 840 500GB.

Hopefully this might be helpful for other people trying to do the same.

Good Catch! I always setup the SSD or HD drive externally in a USB3 case before putting it in so I guess I didn't hit that issue.
