How can I clear my hard drive?

I recently overloaded my hard drive with files and now my laptop turns on properly, but will not get past the loading screen. I would like to clear some space on my hard drive or wipe it out completely. I have all my files backed up on an external hard drive, so I wouldn't lose anything if I clear it out. I have tried using single user mode to delete the files, but whenever I try to delete something, it does not permit me because the files are set to "read only". I've heard there's a way to connect the drive to another computer in order to clean it, but I don't know if I'll be able to do that, because some of the ports on my laptop don't function. What's the best way to get my hard drive cleaned?

You can remove the drive (bit of a pain with an iBook) and use an IDE->USB adapter. They sell for around 20€ in good computer shops here in germany.

So with the adapter it will more or less work like an external hard drive?

If you want to clear the drive follow the instructions in this link. I would make sure I had copies of all software currently on the drive. Ralph

Another thing you can try, besides completely wiping your drive as per rj713's suggestion, is Target Disk Mode. If your firewire port still works (and you can track down a firewire cable), you can boot your computer holding T. Then, you plug in your laptop to another computer via a firewire cable, and it acts as an external hard drive.

My firewire port no longer works, is there any way I can do the same with in a different way? Maybe with USB?

Unfortunately, target disk mode only works through firewire. If you still have some kind of external hard drive, you can install OS X to that (by plugging it in to the computer and holding C with the OS X disk in the drive). Then, when you restart your computer, press and hold alt (before it makes the apple start up noise) and you should be able to select the external as the drive you boot from.

It should be a simple thing to copy the files across from there.
