I notice in a lot of the Ifixit guides that include removing the glass and display, the first thing done is removing the ram. Is this absolutely required? What are the consequences of not doing so?

To replace the Ram modules you access them via a screwed on access door. Follow this IFIXIT guide Replacing iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 RAM.
The late '12 intro'ed ultra thin 21.5" model (EMC 2544) it's a bear to upgrade as you do indeed need to pull off the screen. The 27" model (EMC 2546) has an access door just behind the stand on the back.

Dan, thanks for the response but I'm not sure how it addresses my question. I must have been unclear; my question is - , on a Mid-2011 27" Imac, does one HAVE to remove the RAM BEFORE one removes the LCD, even in the course of Non-RAM related repairs? I need to replace a component behind the display; I've noticed that on many of the Ifixit repair guides for my model (Mid-2011 27" Imac), the first step is to remove the RAM. So I am asking, what is the purpose of removing the RAM if the ultimate intention is to swap out a component behind the LCD?
It depends... If you are removing the main logic board then on many models you need to in order for the logic board to clear the housing. In this series most of the repairs don't need removing of the RAM modules.

You may not be able to get the frame off and you might break the RAM trying to do so. Also the video cable that attaches to the middle of the logic board is weak so take great care when removing it. A second pair of hands might be helpful when trying to remove the LCD as this big boy is unwieldy to work on.

But, frame? I'm working on a mid-2011 27", not the newer version with the glued on frame - is that the frame you're referring to? And yes, the data cable connection is delicate to say the least - I'm having what seems like a problem reattaching it. But I think my real problem now is the LDC power - it looks a little like the connection on the logic board might have shorted at some point, and I was wondering it, by some strange wiring that I haven't heard about, leaving the RAM in when removing the LCD might have caused it.
You're right the frame doesn't come off this one. On attaching the video cable. I found that it was safer to detach the cable from the LCD, attach it to the logic board first and then attach it back to the LCD when assembling.
