iMac Hardware Error 4MOT/4/40000003: HDD-1316

My screen froze twice in the past 2 weeks on my iMac so I ended up doing a hardware test on my iMac and this error came up..

4MOT/4/40000003: HDD-1316

What do I need to replace?

Any help would be great...

Backed up all my files just in case.

This worked for me so I hope it works for you:

So what I ended up doing was this...

I ended up finding this FREE app called smcFanControl

because I wanted to make the HD Fan run on high for a couple of minutes to see if maybe it was just some dust or gunk making the fan not run how it should. I did it and right after I ran a Hardware test again and it showed no more errors. Then I ran the HD test again but the extened test just to make sure and came out with no errors also.

After that gave my iMac a fresh new Clean install of Snow Leopard and now I am back up and running.

Im still gonna be keeping a good eye on it for the next few weeks if anything Ill post here.

You could have one of two problems:

  • Your HD maybe over heating exceeding what the HD fan unit can cool as the HD is one it's last legs
  • It's also possible the HD fan unit is failing

I would first install a thermal sensor & fan monitoring software to see which is failing here. Temperature Gauge is available on Apples App store as one possibility.

Follow this guide here: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2390 Hard Drive Replacement

When you open your system you might also want to make an effort to clean out the dust buildup as I'm sure given the systems age you have a fair amount.

Ernest - Can't see your Flicker pics (have you marked them as private?) You may want to put them here Uploading images. Also can you give us the last four digits of your serial number so we correctly identify your system and I can then give you the correct links then.
