Half my Screen is dimmed

MacBook 13'' Unibody Late 2008

I left my macbook in my kitchen for 8 hrs and didn't realize that it was -10 outside and likewise the temperature was the same inside the kitchen.

I opened my macbook and found this

This is maximum brightness. I can connect to another monitor and it works fine.

Could it be an LCD problem? Inverter? loose connections?

I'm tempted to open it up but would like this communities input.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

First are you measuring temp in Centigrade or Fahrenheit? -10 C is not that low that it could cause this, if you allowed the system to warmup in a sealed bag so moisture wouldn't condense on the inside parts.

If you didn't then you could be facing a moisture (corrosion) issue here. Otherwise you will need to replace the backlight LED unit which is a big job. You may find just replacing the entire lid assembly will be easier and cheaper.

Here's the IFIXIT guide Replacing MacBook Unibody Model A1278 LCD Panel You'll need to go up to Step 14 if you replace the entire assembly.

I apologize it was extremely cold. Is replacing the entire lid assembly instruction on this site?

Also sometimes randomly the entire screen would work, but once I lower the brightness or shut the monitor it goes back to the half-screen dimm

Yes, the link I supplied goes through the entire process of removing not only the lid assembly but also continues into the process of replacing the LCD unit. You only need to get to step 14.

Where do you live that your kitchen would get that cold? Is it isolated from the rest of your living quarters?

by

It was back in the winter time, near the borders of Canada & USA
