Why will my iPod only charge on the power wall adaptor?

my ipod will not recognize my computer when i plug it in to the usb

Does it start up when you plug it into a AC wall adapter? Does it start up when you plug it into a USB port?

So i would have to buy a new battery for the ipod after taking the old one out?

That is correct. Straight forward and not to difficult. the batteries are pretty inexpensive and readily available. Just depends on where you life. Thank you for accepting my answer.

Monique, it does sound like you are having a bad battery. It does not receive enough amperage from th USB post since that is limited to 500mA, whereas the AC adapter usually supplies 1000mA. I would start by replacing the battery. Follow this guide. Luckily this model iPod is relatively easy to open. Be careful when you lift the clip for the battery cable, it does have a tendency of breaking of the board. Use a paperclip, bend it into an L-shape and lift the clip straight up.
