Battery ok but needs Power adaptor to turn on

Unit will not turn on from off mode unless external power adapter is attached. Cable can be removed as soon as it starts to boot and everything works from there. Another problem that may be related is that whenever you hold down the power button to turn the unit off, it raises the volume to the maximum setting.
