Power on OK, chimes, then text saying, 'you need to restart...'

Powers on OK, chimes, then a gray screen and text in 4 languages saying, "You need to restart your computer... " Stays powered up with that message.

Normal sounds otherwise; chime, fan; HD.

If, I hold down power button through 1st chime, then, a BEEP sound occurs, then, a 2nd chime, then, a black screen and then it powers off.

Boots OK into Disc Target Mode no problem.

I've reseated RAMs. The BATT is good. The Charger is good. Charge circuit works OK.

Does this behavior change at all if you hold down the left Shift key while booting, triggering Safe mode? If you hold down the Option key while powering it on do you reach a screen that shows your hard drive? If so then you might try to boot to an external OS (either from an external hard drive, to another Mac booted to target disk mode or to the gray discs that came with your Mac). By holding Option when powering on you should be able to see, and select, any bootable Mac OS that is connected to your Mac.

Yes, it behaves differently:

Holding L Shift key, power on, boots; sometimes it gets past the gray screen with text as above, but after a few minutes the Apple logo becomes a circle with a line across it… and it just sits there.

Holding Option, power on, boots, then HD appears with an arrow beneath. I click on arrow, then the gray screen with the text as above appears.

No peripherals connceted.

You mentioned "Kernal Panic." That appears in dark letters on top of the gray screen. Also "Unable to find driver for this platform" And hexadecimal addresses; more.

Have you upgraded/updated any software recently? Do you have the gray restore discs that came with your Mac? If so you might try booting to those by inserting it into your Mac and either booting while holding the C key or using the Option key method I mentioned above to select your restore disc. If it boots properly to those discs then it's likely a software issue and a disk repair and/or reinstallation of the operating system would be in order.

I have not performed any updates or upgrades. Neither has laptop been damaged: no drops, no spills. I do not have the "gray restore discs." I do have gray restore discs (OSX 10.5.2) that came with another laptop, an A1260, but have not tried them with concern they might not be ejected.

Starting with holding down Option, HD reliably appears but then clicking on the arrow the gray screen appears with text as above, or simply shuts down.

Starting with holding down L Shift key it chimes, gear wheel spins, but then shuts down.

Sounds like the HD has some corruption issues. Do you have a second Mac which you can connect to your laptop? If you do setup your laptop in Target mode and connect it via FireWire or Ethernet to your other system. From the other system run Apples Disk Utility or better yet Drive Genius to check the HD out.

With Drive Genius (or other defragmenter) after checking the drive, check to see if its badly fragmented. If so that could also have a bearing on this problem. But before you defragment the drive make sure you have a full backup of your important stuff.

If you don't have a defragmenter app you could also reformat your HD and restore your full backup back onto your HD via target mode.

I booted it into Target Disc Mode, but dialogue box on a second Mac laptop says, "You cannot use Disk Utility with this version." I've never defragged an Apple HD, can you recommend software?

Fortunately, I have data from HD backed up elsewhere; and so, no concern for remaining data.

Would you please recommend a defragmenter App. I suppose that is my next thing to try… so thankful to you and others: Thank You All !!

Sounds like you'll need to use a different formatter tool. I use Drive Genius my self as it offers a full suite of tools needed to service just about any kind of disk problem you can encounter Drive Genius 3. It can also reformat & test your drive, well worth the cost.

Don't forget you might need to reinstall the OS. Do you have the grey CD that came with your system or have a black logo'ed OS-X CD or DVD (Snow Leopard)? If not you'll need to dig them out. Remember this system can only go up to the last version of Snow leopard 10.6.8 as it does not have a CPU that can run 64-bit code.

I don't have the "gray CD" that came with this A1150 laptop. I do have retail discs: Leopard, and Snow Leopard, but I'm concerned I may not be able to eject* them. …. I will investigate Drive Genius, I wonder if I can use it in Target Disk Mode? Thank you...

*I once had a A1260 laptop in which I was unable to eject a disc.

by

Yes, you can install Snow Leopard via your other system with the laptop in target mode. The only rub here is the system able to run Snow leopard? IF it's to new it might not load. As to the ejecting issue. Unless the drive has a problem you shouldn't have an issue booting your laptop with it. Besides, it's not that hard to eject the disc manually. Stick with Snow Leopard and you can also run Drive Genius in target mode in any case.

Unplug any peripherals. before rebooting.. you are seeing a kernel panic. Sometimes they are software, sometimes they are hardware... also follow LikeaRabbit's directions to see if you can identify which type you have.
