black screen upon booting

My macbook pro was working fine. However when I turned it on a few minutes after shutting down I was greeted with a idle black screen. I went online to find answers and there were numerous cases about the 2010 macbook pros. However I have a 2011 macbook pro so I know that they weren't caused by the same issue. I tried resetting the smc, pram, booting into safe mode. No luck. What do you think is the problem? Do I need to replace the logic board?

First step is to connect to an external monitor to find out if this is a bad VGU/VGC or if it's limited to the internal (onboard) display chain.

If you have video on the external monitor your logic board and VGU is ok... you should then try to boot to an external CD/DVD Drive or boot into Repair. (leave the monitor connected) run repair, run AHT.. see if that does anything helpful. Your problem might be software/HD related

If there's no external video either then you have serious problems with your VGU or Logic board.
