Can I replace my CD/DVD drive?

My eMac has a broken CD/DVD drive so I am not able to upgrade my operating system, etc. Can I replace it with a new drive and then upgrade it to a current software version?

Here is a link on doing just that. codyduncum is correct in checking what operating systems your eMac will run. No eMac will run Snow Leopard but the newer ones with enough ram will run Leopard. When you get to the site click on eMac disassembly. Ralph

I had a similar problem with my internal CD/DVD drive. I haven't replaced it yet, but I purchased an external CD/DVD R/RW firewire drive for which I was able to boot the eMac. I solved a majority of my problems.

I have serviced many of these models. The machine is not picky at all as to what you replace it with. Just use a qaulity drive so you wont have to replace it in the future. It take about a half hour or so.

What is worth in 2012 to answer this question... :) I have just replaced the DVD drive in an eMac 1.25GHz.

It was not that difficult to be honest, but takes some time and effort, following carefully a Macworld 2005 article about this very topic.

Another optical drive is not all that would be necessary. Depending on what you are trying to upgrade to, depends on if you have the necessary requirements such as RAM, or processor speed or type. A new optical drive would work, but be careful knowing that might not be the only thing necessary to fix / update to install a new operating system.
