Why does my loudspeaker cut out?

My iPhone is 1.5 years old. After a reboot of the phone the speaker for the ringer will work only for a short time. If it is too loud it will cut right out.

I cleaned the headphone jack and dock connector using a q-tip and alcohol. I did full restore of new system starting from scratch. Sound will come back on occasionally and if I play it a bit (especially if I turn it up), it then stops abruptly.

I can adjust the volume level of the speakers using the side buttons or slider but can't hear it.

I can choose a ringtone, it plays but I can't hear it either (the phone does still vibrate).

I can adjust the ringer volume up and down using the side buttons but no ringtone heard when a call is received (just vibration).

No clicks on keyboard use.

If I plug in headphones, it plays all sounds and when I adjust the volume it tells me the headphone volume is being adjusted. If I unplug the headphone the speakers do not operate.

Help !!!!!!!!!!!

My first Apple product and I am very disappointed.

This phone has NEVER been dropped, gotten wet etc. etc.

Just replace the loudspeaker because it obviously sounds like its defective, cheap and doesnt require total dismantle of the iphone... the loudspeaker part cost about 3-4 dollars on ebay with free shipping... you will need a precision pentalobe and philips screwdriver to perform the operation. The loudspeaker is located at the bottom of the phone below the battery. you will notice a black wire attached to it, that is the signal antenna which provides the signal strength for wireless connections. MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE THAT FROM THE LOUD SPEAKER BEFORE REPLACING!!!! if you throw it away you will be without service... once you remove that you replace it on the new loudspeaker and screw it back into place and its the same procedure for both cdma and gsm iphone 4/4s... but regardless the procedure in words looks like alot but i guarantee you you will spend less than 5 mins on it and you will be tempted to do much more than that lol anyway i hope this helped
