I can't erase file

Hi, I purchased this unit at Office Depot and would like to use it fully as a Mac unit. However it came with a 6MB Windows file called U3 System. Normally I wouldn't care about the 6MB but every time I use the stick I have to separately eject this file. Its a nuisance I would like to be rid of but get info says I can only read the file. Anyone know how I can delete it? Ralph

I have tried to delete this thing every way I know. In get info its listed as a read only file. Ralph

You can download a utility here that may let you get rid of it:

Try connecting it to a windows computer, then launch the U3 program, and navigate to the option of "remove U3 smartdrive software" (Or something such as that) and that will remove the file. I have 2 Sandisk Cruzers, one 2GB and one 16GB and the only way i have been able to get rid of U3 it through those means. Reformatting, erasing, and flashing the drive do not remove it, and that appears to be the only way to do it.

Thanks for the answer Chris but I no longer own a Windows machine. Thankfully Tims solution works in Mac. + for the good try. Ralph

You could always just reformat the drive through disk utility. I think this will probably be the best bet in this situation.

Wow, did it format at all or just error when you tried?

What did it say when trying to format?

It did not give a message--just refused to format that partition. Ralph

Tim, I tried your sandisk link at the top of this page and it says no longer a valid link. I have a Flash drive with a "virus" on it and it keeps flashing there and not there. Won't exist long enough for me to reformat. Looking for solution.

Alan,

your drive might not be getting enough power to operate. I had the same issue with a 4GB USB flash drive, and using another computer and plugging it in directly (without going through USB hubs ets.) worked. You may have to try more than one computer to get it to work properly.

However, if the flash drive worked fine on the same computer it's now having problems with and spontaneously started having problems, formatting it may help.
